As much as I like Linux and Mac OS/X, there really is no viable alternative to Windows for many people. I don't have time for these interim experiments. I learned two things from the experience: (1) place a heavy weight on user-serviceability when choosing a laptop; and (2) avoid Microsoft updates that you don't have good reason to apply. But news like this certainly makes the urge stronger to just accept such disadvantages, and actually switch to Linux.
